Fellowships and Awards

All Ph.D. students are fully supported upon entering the graduate program, including tuition, benefits and stipend. Select students receive fellowships and awards for their achievements in teaching and research, or their potential to become outstanding scientists.  Support from external sources is also available.

FELLOWSHIPS

Fellowships provide funding for graduate student expenses. Beyond prestige, recipients can devote their full effort to research year-round.

University Fellowships

Presidential Fellowship

The presidential fellowship is the most prestigious award for incoming graduate students. Competition is reserved for only the most outstanding candidates.

University Fellowship

Awarded to outstanding incoming graduate students, the university fellowship is intended to support students who demonstrate outstanding potential for success in their chosen fields.

External Fellowships

The following are nationally competitive fellowships for extraordinary students in the chemical sciences. While exact award amounts and terms change each year, the fellowships generally provide multiple years of stipend support.

AWARDS

Awards are given in recognition of excellence in scholarship, teaching or service.

University Awards

Doctoral Dissertation Completion Grant

For the Doctoral Dissertation Completion Grant, departments nominate doctoral students who have completed all requirements for the degree, except the required dissertation, and are advanced to candidacy. The Doctoral Dissertation Completion grant includes a stipend and one credit of tuition remission. The award is for five months.

Departmental Awards

Daniel Swern Fellowship

The Swern Fellowship was established as a memorial to Professor Daniel Swern, a truly distinguished member of the Fels Research Institute and the Department of Chemistry. It was designed to help outstanding graduate students as they pursue their dissertation research.

Francis H. Case Fellowship Fund

Dr. Francis Case was a professor of Organic Chemistry for 61 years at Temple University. The Case Fellowship Award recognizes graduate students exhibiting the highest, most exemplary levels of accomplishment in research. Please contact the Chemistry Department for more information on this award.

Guy F. Allen Memorial Award

Mary Ellen Allen, to commemorate her husband's interest in graduate student participation in the education of undergraduate students and as a living memorial to her husband, started this fund as an award for outstanding Teaching Assistants. This award is given annually to outstanding T.A.'s in Chemistry for their excellence in teaching.

College of Science and Technology Awards

Graduate Award for Outstanding Teaching

CRITERIA FOR DISTINGUISHED TEACHING:

Although diverse talents and classroom styles go into good teaching, distinguished teachers in any field are those who consistently and exceptionally do the following:

  • Demonstrate a command of the subject or the experimental apparatus
  • Prepare their presentations and assignments carefully
  • Are clear and rigorous in their presentations
  • Make their expectations and basis for grading clear
  • Challenge students intellectually
  • Provide prompt and full feedback to students on their progress
  • Encourage, motivate and inspire students to do their best work
Graduate Award for Outstanding Research

OUTSTANDING RESEARCH ASSISTANT AWARD

While the methods and materials used for research vary with the field of investigation, outstanding research in any field is characterized by:

  • The significance of the problem that is addressed
  • The novelty of the approach used
  • The rigor of the research

In evaluating a piece of research by any of these criteria, a scientist who works in an area close to the field of investigation may disagree with one whose area of research is far removed from the area. In the case of truly outstanding research, however, it is should be possible to convince any reasonable scientist that all three criteria are satisfied.
