Undergraduate Research in Earth and Environmental Science 

Earth and Environmental Science (EES) undergraduate students can conduct research alongside faculty and graduate students. In some cases, students can earn credit for research during the academic year and some opportunities may provide financial support.  

Types of opportunities 

There are two separate opportunities to participate in research: 

1. Formal projects are provided through the College of Science and Technology Research Scholars Program (RSP) that culminates in the Undergraduate Research Symposium and other university and international research opportunities. Explore the opportunities and apply to this program here.

2. Students may separately inquire about informal opportunities in EES. Opportunities are varied and may include volunteering in a research lab, acting as a lab or field assistant for graduate students, committing to work study or enrolling in independent study.  Complete this form to express your desire to participate in EES research (outside of the RSP).

Support for Undergraduate Student Research and Academic Activities

EES undergraduate students can request financial support to conduct research or participate in other academic opportunities. 

• Qualifying activities include presentation at professional meetings, participation in workshops, field camp, field or remote laboratory research, or summer research. 
• The requesting student must have a primary role, such as being the presenter of an abstract or active role in a research project.  
• Each student must provide documentation for their proposed activity, the name of an EES faculty sponsor for the activity, and a budget.  
• This grant is not intended to be the primary source of project funding. Other sources of funding include the Temple University CARAS Program, funding from faculty sponsored research, or funds secured from other organizations (e.g., the American Geophysical Union Student Travel Grant).
