Where are you from originally?
Nyack, New York
Why are you interested in healthcare?
I enjoy putting others' needs before mine and helping individuals through difficult situations. Through these moments is when I feel like I am flourishing the most and succeeding my ambition to be a positive impact for others. As a child, I used to hate going to the dentist, I was a nervous patient with high anxiety. When a new dentist joined the office that I was a patient to, her calm and friendly demeanor was very appealing to me. This new dentist was nothing but understanding and patient with my fears. Because of her caring persona and motivation to help me eliminate my nerves, I developed an appreciation for her work. At fourteen, I began working for my pediatric dentist and I learned numerous procedures, coping mechanisms and the use of dental instruments. My personal experience of overcoming my dental fears inspired me to pursue a future within this profession so I too, could help and heal patients through the art of dentistry.
What is your target profession (eg, physician, dentist, PA, etc)?
Dentist, DMD
Why did you choose the Temple CST Postbacc Program?
I decided to enroll in the Temple CST Post-Bacc program because I knew that this fast-paced program would challenge me academically in ways that I haven’t experienced previously and knew it would prepare me for professional school. I also enjoyed that Temple University was located in a city that I have never lived in before. Additionally, this program also attracted me that it was completed a student body of like-minded people who also needed an extra enhancement with their academics similar to me.
How did the program impact you and your healthcare journey?
My top priority while enrolled in the ACHS program was to improve by science GPA to make my application more competitive when applying for dental school. However, Temple University and the CST Post-Bacc Program also improved my professionalism, self-confidence and expanded my network circle. During my time as a student in the post-bacc program, I joined the Temple University Pre-Dental Health Society and Operation Smile of Temple University, and I also volunteered as a dental assistant at Philadelphia FIGHT, a service organization that provides healthcare to individuals living with AIDS. My involvement in these organizations were due to my enrollment as a student at Temple University and introduced me to new skills and knowledge within dentistry that I would not have been able to experience elsewhere.
What is one thing you love about Philadelphia?
While living in Philadelphia I thoroughly enjoyed how easy it was to get around the city. The public transit was incredibly easy to navigate but mostly I loved that I was able to walk everywhere! I loved their Chinatown, the fun shops on South St. and my favorite neighborhood to explore was Fairmont. Every weekend I would take four-mile walks through Fairmont and all the way to the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Tell us one fun fact about yourself.
I love food! I enjoy cooking and trying new foods. While in undergrad I had my own cooking show, “Fine dining with Cori Fine.”
How about a second fun fact?
I drove across the country from New York to Southern California prior to starting dental school! I got accepted into Western University of Health Sciences, which is located in Pomona, Ca. My favorite stops during the drive were in Boulder, Colorado and Cedar City, Utah. It was an experience of a lifetime and a great bonding opportunity that I had with my father.
If you could only eat one food/meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
This is a very hard choice, but it would have to be either chicken parmigiana or Chinese noodles!
What is a quote that inspires you?
Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new. ― Albert Einstein
What is something that you've been doing during the pandemic and are pleasantly surprised that you enjoy?
Prior to the pandemic, I did not hike much. I was always very active and enjoyed being outdoors, but I never enjoyed hiking. During the peak of the pandemic, I spent more time outside to compartmentalize my thoughts and forced myself to explore the woods and overcome my irrational fear of being attacked by spiders. Yes, I know it was always highly unlikely, but having arachnophobia does that to you! I ended up seeing my neighborhood from a different view, and when I drove across country to California, I completed amazing hikes along the way in Colorado and Utah with the most breathtaking views I have ever seen!
If you could summarize the Temple CST Postbacc Program in 5 words, what would they be?
Challenging, Rewarding, Successful, Encouraging, and Transformative
What would be one tip you would give to students about applying to or preparing for medical/dental/PA/etc school?
When applying or while being enrolled in professional school, remember that you are on your own individual path. This is something that I have to remind myself daily when I am in situations where I may see other students performing better than me in clinic. You do not know how many hours your classmates may have studied prior to their exams or their previous experiences before their enrollment. Continuously comparing your successes to others will make you distracted and lose sight of your expected results. Instead of using this energy focusing on what others are doing and overlooking on your existing talents, take a step back and think, what can I do to improve myself from the day before.
